Job Description - Social Media Manager
Social media is a daily part of most people’s life. People scroll past hundreds of posts per day. Yet, strategizing individual social media posts is the job of people around the world. A great example is me! Last year, I worked as a Social Media Manager for Salvi Media, a marketing agency in Chicago. Salvi Media's mission is to convey the story of Chicago-owned businesses through content. Their main project is The CEO Series, where the top CEOs in Chicago share their tips for business success.
Through my time with Salvi Media, I juggled many hats:
- Community Storyteller
- Influencer
- Assistant
Community Storyteller
- Build relationships with clients
- Create a community of marketing professionals
- Tell the stories of local Chicago businesses
I was part of the company for a whole year after they extended my summer internship. I decided to stay part of Salvi Media because of its commitment to telling local stories for small businesses. Imagine reading a book. The story you understand through a book is what I try to convey through a video. An example is when I worked with Horizons for Youth, a non-profit in academic success for struggling children. My task was to create a promotional video for their website that described their organization. I started by scheduling a creative meeting with the marketing heads of the non-profit to understand their vision for the video. I then created a storyboard of all the different scenes we would have in the commercial and reported back to the client with progress checks. I wanted to make sure that I was making positive progress toward the result Horizons for Youth expected. I worked with my production team at Salvi Media to create the video and presented it to Horizons for Youth. We had a candid conversation about video impressions and editing improvements to increase effectiveness. With this transparent process of co-creating the video with Horizon’s for Youth team, I was able to create a 20% higher retention rate on the website.
Influencer
- Understand the company culture
- Promote Salvi Media services
- Create day-in-the-life content to humanize the Salvi Media brand
It’s a funny situation...marketing agencies are so busy creating marketing strategies for their clients, that they forget to market themselves. This can be detrimental for the agency as they need to market themselves to gain new clients and keep their business running. Influencers are the new era of marketing. From TikTokers to YouTubers, influencers use their follower platform to promote ideas, products, and companies. I worked on promoting all the content Salvi Media had created for their clients to show off their video production skills. Additionally, to bring personality to the company, I encouraged employees to film a day in their lives at Salvi Media.
I collaborated with a team of content creators and branding experts to refine their current digital marketing strategy. We landed on using a monthly social media calendar to promote company content, client work, and market trends every week. I used my analytical skills to compile data from post impressions and engagement. Post impressions and engagement look at likes, views, comments, and shares. With this data, I was able to compare past and current posts and understand which posts succeeded and why. I was able to create a stream of successful posts to increase impressions by 20% across social media platforms. Additionally, I was able to draw in quality marketing followers as potential clients for Salvi Media.
Assistant
- Record meeting notes for the CEO
- Get social media posts and captions approved by brand experts
- Respond to any edits and last-minute changes from my boss
Salvi Media is a small marketing agency with only 15 employees. Thus, as an employee, I was not restricted to one role. Throughout my internship, I started building a working relationship with one of the co-CEOs. Since I was present in all his meetings and he was the head of marketing, he gave me a lot of guidance on what content Salvi Media wanted to post. I became his right-hand man, tweaking social media posts to embrace the Salvi Media personality or adding events to his calendar. Think of a learner’s assistant at USC. They help the professor with all their grading and help to teach concepts to students. In the same way, I helped my boss with his meeting tasks and then conveyed the updates from these meetings to other team members. The CEO mindset of always looking at all aspects of the business to reach long-term goals was very eye-opening, as an aspiring entrepreneur.
